Kershaw Family Tree- Royalty/Nobility/numbers/ Statistics

June 2014

As of now, there are over 13,000 names on the family tree.  I will now try to give some numbers as far as names and places.

ancestry.com has a companion program called Family Tree Maker which organizes a family tree on ancestry.com to help make physical family trees as well as organize names and places and make things easier and interesting.  It includes maps of places as well as who lives in that place.

I will show the top ten for right now.

LAST NAMES
(not including noble or royal lineages-too confusing), place names, number of ancestors who had that name.
Nevill, Neville-England-75 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Neville for interesting history of this family's roots)
Bassett, Basset-56, (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basset_(family)) regarding history of this family
Ferriers, Ferrières, Ferrers, Ferrars-53 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_de_Ferrers regarding their name and patriarch), "His family tree is well researched and various people are said to be descended from this line.[10] These include George the FirstLady DianaGeorge Washington, and Winston Churchill Mia Farrow."
Beaumont, Bellomont-England, France-48 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_de_Beaumont regarding this family)
Peverell, Peverel, Peveril, Peveral-45 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Peverel regarding their name and patriarch)
Percy, Percie, Perci -43 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Percy for their history)
Montgomerie, Montgomery-41 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_de_Montgomery,_seigneur_of_Montgomery and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_de_Montgomerie,_1st_Earl_of_Shrewsbury for their name and patriarchs)
Boteler, Butler, Botiller -41, (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobald_Walter,_1st_Baron_Butler regarding this family's patriarch)
Pecche, Peche, Peache-40

Gardner, Gardiner -24
Montfort-24

All of the above names are from English ancestors, and remain so except for the Gardners who immigrated to America during the "Great Migration," which I have mentioned before.  Others have ancestors from Normandy and came over during the "Conquest", but have been in England ever since.  All are historically important and long lived families in Great Britain.
The Montgomery family name is taken from either two of Norman towns, Saint-Germain-de-Montgomerie, or Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery, Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.  Early Montgomerys were Lords there, and their descendants came to England during the "Conquest". (see n.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_de_Montgomerie,_1st_Earl_of_Shrewsbury for the information of their patriarch)
The Ferrer Family came from Ferrières-Saint-Hilaire, Eure, Haute-Normandie, France.  They also came to England during the "Conquest". (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_de_Ferrers for their roots and patriarch)
All other American ancestors' names would not make the list obviously since they only had a few hundred years and around ten generations of names.

PLACES: (number of ancestors who lived there)
Normandy, France- (including medieval Duchy, present day Upper and Lower Normandy)-269
Lancashire County, England- (including Manchester)-111
Paris-100
Flanders Region- (includes Belgium, France, Netherlands)- 84
Yorkshire, England-76
London-69
Essex County, England - 62
Suffolk County, England (Clare Castle, Clare), -59
Burgundy, Bourgogne, France-55 (Medieval Burgundy was a Kingdom, a Duchy, a County etc. and a much larger area than the present day Burgundy Region of France.
Devon, England- 34

Again, no American places for same reason as for names discussed above.  And does not include Ireland nor Scandinavia since I was not able to follow my maternal grandparents trees very far.  And again, Normandy does include Vikings and their descendants.

Royalty:
As I have stated before, the last King in our family tree was Edward III of England, who died 21 Jun 1377. (April 2020, I found another King - Charles VI `the Beloved', `le Fol', :1368- 1422)  All others were from medieval times.  Queens would be almost the same number of course, but for a couple of possible concubines.

Kings of Wales- ( Gwynedd, of the Britons, North Wales, South Wales, Deheubarth) - 53
Kings of Europe- (France, Franks, Austrasia, Neustria, Burgundy, Germany)- 38
Kings of England- (Anglo-Saxons, Normans, English,)-  23
Kings of Scotland- (the Scots, the Picts, Galloway, Alba,)- 26
Kings of Scandinavia- (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Gotland, Zealand, Vingulmark) - 28 (most are legendary kings from early medieval times - are a mix of the countries)(In January 2018, I found about 20 more Swedish kings from early times who are all legendary since Vikings had no written records, all legends are based on famous poems written later)
Kings of Ireland-(Dublin, Leinster)- 4
(as of September 2014, I found a new branch of Irish Kings)(as of August 2017, I found a new branch of Irish Kings)  which brings the number to 53 (including Dublin, Leinster, Ulster, Munster, Ailech, Osraige or Ossory, Mide or Meath, Déisi Muman or Dessi,
As of  June 2015, I have found 21 more Irish Kings,
As of August 2017, I found 13 new Irish Kings of Osraige or Ossory.
(a note on Ireland-it is known as the Land of Kings- a good Tourist slogan- one source states that  at one time during the medieval period there were a 150 kings ruling about 500,000 people in Ireland.)
As of September 2016, I have found Russian and Byzantine Royalty.
Byzantine Emperor-6
Russian Princes of Kiev-5
Kings of Spain- (Navarre, Toledo, Leon, Castille, Barcelona, Pamploma,)-20
As of November 2017, I've found 3 German Kings not included in the above

Dukes:
I will not count Dukes who were also Kings.

France- (Franks, Burgundy, Alsace, Lorraine, Aquitaine, Laon ) -46
Germany (Saxony, Bavaria,  Alemania,  Swabia)- 34
Italy ( Spoleto, Friuli,  Florence, Caetani, )-16
Belgium (Limburg, Hainault,  Brabant, ) 11
Brittany-8
Czech Republic- (Dukes of Bohemia, Moravia) -7
Normandy- 6
Poland- 4
England -3  (Duke of Buckingham)

The last Duke on our family tree was William "the Saint" Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, and Count of Poitou  who died Apr 1137.   He was the father of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Aliénor d’Aquitaine; Éléonore de Guyenne; Queen of England.  Also, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of BuckinghamKG (3 February 1478 – 17 May 1521) who did not rule a Duchy, but was very close to the royals at the time and was executed at Tower Hill, London for being that close

On September 15, 2014, I counted about more than 800 Counts (and counting) on the family tree. (Whew)

All were Medieval Counts who represented Medieval Counties of Europe (France,  Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg) i.e. Paris; Brionne, Normandy, France; Anjou, France; Boulogne, France; Burgundy, France; Flanders, Belgium; Hainaut, Belgium; Trier, Germany; Turin, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; just to name a few.

The last counts on our family tree were:
Geoffrey "the Handsome" "le Bel" "Plantagenet" Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Duke of Normandy, Count of Mortain, (1113-1151), my 27th GGF, who was the father of Henry II, King of England,

Roger, Bernard, "The Fat", "el Gordo", Count Of Foix, France I (1130-1188), my 25th GGF, who was father of Rohese, Rohaise de Foix, France, my 24th GGM, who became an English Baroness.
